Caradoc Whistle Installation.

This is an account of how i fitted a steam whistle to my Caradoc.

David Bailey Engineering can supply a resonator whistle for Edrig/Caradoc

I decided to add a third servo to my Caradoc to operate the whistle.

Starting with a Ripmax SD100 servo and bracket:

I Installed the servo and bracket to rear of cab:

The whistle valve is fitted to the pressure gauge fitting

DJB supply a new banjo bolt (top) compared with the original Accucraft banjo bolt (bottom). The new banjo bolt has a taper cut into it just below the bolt head. This creates a steam tight joint when done up and doesn't need any fibre washers.

I then Connectted the servo to the whistle valve:

The second part of adding the whistle is to fix the whistle and resonator to the body.

The whistle that comes with Caradoc is on the opposite side to that of Edrig. The windows are also lower and closer together on Caradoc. This means that there is very little room for manouvre when marking out the holes for the whistle. There is really only one positon the holes can go in so the resonator chamber clears the boiler and the cab window. On Edrig there is much more room.

Inside the cab - the black resonator:

In front of the cab the actual whistle (Accucraft original on the left, DJB whistle on the right):

Put the body back on the chassis:

Then Connect the whistle valve, to the whistle, with the supplied black flexible pipe:

Unfortunately adding another wire into the reciever meant it wouldn't all fit inside the undercab box for the R/C, so i had to get a smaller battery pack. Which meant testing had to wait until new battery's had been charged.

The whistle in action - produces a large cloud of steam. It is a much lower note than i expected. Produces a very good sound. Unfortunately it became blocked after around 20 toots. As a result, only blew raspberrys after that. It comes off the engine very easily - just pulls off, then takes apart easily to clean it out.
