Live Steam Railway Show Kew Bridge Steam Museum

Saturday 17th November 2007

As I have said in previous reports this must be the venue for steam enthusiasts. The combination of  steam railways and the mighty steam pumping engines is something not to be missed. It is a chance to see these engines actually working rather than just static museum pieces. Certainly what it lacks in exhibitors it more than makes up with atmosphere.

The problem the museum has is how to fit the layouts and traders in such an old building. This they do admirably and it adds a bit of interest looking in every nook and corner and coming across another stand. Even outside space is used to the full with the ride on steam engines (They needed the steam to keep warm!) and a large marquee.

Parking on site is limited but there is plenty of space nearby by the tower blocks.

Although some areas are difficult for those with mobility problems, because of the very nature of the building, there were  ramps and lifts where possible.

The show is sponsored by Brandbright who provide a wide range of products . G.R.S, IMP models, Kent Garden Railways and Martins Models provided a good selection of G scale products.  A varied Books and magazines from model railways to preservation societies were also on hand.

My layout of the show was Wag’s wharf an industrial 16mm railway because you really believed the models were doing a real job. But the 009 and 4mm layout exhibited by Brian Caton had a few people scratching their heads. How does he make steam engines work in these small scales? Kew Bridge from the London area 16 mm group is always full of interest and as it is the first layout you come across never fails to stop you in your tracks.

In the marquee there was the Rhydypeneryn Light Railway and my first sight of Trumpers Halt by the 81c MRC .I thought was a nice touch to provide an album of photos from the club layouts etc.

A good range of refreshments were speedily served by the friendly staff.

If you are into steam you must visit this annual show if only to soak up the atmosphere of a bygone age.
