Merstham Model Steam Show

14th/15th May 2005

This was truly a family show. It was a multi gauge show going right up to sit on ride trains. Entrance was five pounds each and with the wide variety of stalls and layouts that was good value.

It was well signposted in Merstham although I must confess to taking a wrong turning on my way home.

Apart from the train rides there were some really good layouts and I noticed children loved spotting all the action on the Southdown Layout and the model boats in the swimming pool.

Some model ducks were also having a splash round.

There were some doll house displays and sales stands as well as Meccano, Bayco, model fairground and steam engines.

G Scale was well represented by the G scale Society and all those hardened veterans of shows like Back2Bay6, Chalk Garden Rail, Kent Garden Rail, Tuxcraft and VHR. I sometimes wonder if these people have homes to go to! There was a very active Bring and buy sale too.

I should point out that although I concentrate on G scale there were well over a hundred stalls/displays at this show covering a wide range of interests. One could even buy Wine, homemade cakes, sweets and support several of the charity stalls that were there. Hot food was available at very good prices.

Next show I will be visiting is Stroud. If you attend a show G Scale Mad would be pleased to receive your review. We are based in the Thames Valley so it is difficult for us to get to the Northern shows. It was a visit to the G-Wizz show at Lytham a few years ago that rekindled my interest in garden railways and led to me meeting lots of new friends.
